Springbok General, Handré Pollard is at the center of a global bidding war, with reports suggesting he could become the highest-paid player in rugby history, surpassing England captain Owen Farrell.
According to Planet Rugby, Pollard’s contract with Leicester Tigers expires at the end of the season, and at least ten teams worldwide are vying for his signature, including four Japanese clubs willing to pay an astronomical salary to secure his services.
RUGBY’S BIGGEST PAYDAY?
Reports from South African outlet Rapport indicate that Pollard could command a salary between R15 million and R20 million per season (around £640,000 – £860,000).
This would eclipse Farrell’s earnings and cement Pollard as the highest-paid player in the sport.
Japan’s Suntory Sungoliath—home to the likes of Cheslin Kolbe—has been linked with Pollard, with the club known for signing world-class fly-halves such as Beauden Barrett, Matt Giteau, and Nicolas Sanchez.
Despite the growing speculation, Leicester Tigers remain keen to hold onto Pollard. The 80-Test Springbok, who took a pay cut to join Leicester from Montpellier, addressed his future in December, telling BBC Radio Leicester:
“I have no idea. I can tell you the truth, I do not know yet what I’m doing or where I’m going. I’m just happy being at Leicester and I will enjoy every minute I have here.” (Source: BBC Radio Leicester)
WHAT’S NEXT FOR POLLARD?
With big-money offers from Japan, European heavyweights, and potentially even a return to South Africa, Pollard’s next move remains uncertain.
Leicester have also confirmed the departure of Michael Chieka at the end of the season, adding further uncertainty to their future squad plans.
Meanwhile, the Bulls have reportedly reopened talks with Willie le Roux, exploring the possibility of the veteran shifting to fly-half if he stays in Pretoria.
Pollard’s decision could reshape the landscape of club rugby, with whichever team secures his services gaining one of the most dominant No.10s in world rugby.
