Six medals. One session. A four-time Commonwealth Games record breaker and a piece of sporting history that will never be matched again. That was Wednesday night at Tollcross International Swimming Centre, where the South African Swimmers closed out the pool programme at Glasgow 2026 in a way nobody in that arena will forget in a hurry.

The South African Swimmers walked into the final evening finals session sitting on 16 medals for the Games. They walked out with 22, a six-medal haul crammed into one session that took in two golds, one silver, and three bronzes. It was the kind of night that turns a good campaign into a great one, and it belonged, above everyone else, to Pieter Coetzé.

The 22-year-old completed a clean sweep of every individual backstroke title on offer in Glasgow, taking the 100m backstroke gold in 51.77, a Commonwealth Games record and an African record, and the second-fastest performance in history over the distance. He won by nearly a second, the sort of margin that turns a race into a procession. And he was not finished. Less than an hour later, Coetzé led off the men’s 4x100m medley relay in 51.71, an even quicker split than his individual gold medal swim, though it comes as a relay leg rather than an individual record.

Ruard van Renen backed him up in that same 100m backstroke final, touching third in 53.31 for a one-three finish that had the South African Swimmers smiling before the night had even really started.

“Second-fastest in history, three-for-three on backstroke gold, and he still had enough left to go faster on the relay. That’s not form, that’s a different level entirely!” – 🎙️Jay

Kaylene Corbett produced the swim of her career to take silver in the women’s 200m breaststroke in 2:24.46, an improvement on the bronze she claimed at the previous Games, with Aimee Canny fifth and Rebecca Meder eighth in the same final.

Then came Christian Sadie, whose story is one of the quieter but more remarkable threads of these Games. The para swimmer won gold in the men’s 50m freestyle S7 in 28.06, a Commonwealth Games and African record, completing a run that has now delivered him a different medal at three straight editions of the Games: silver in Gold Coast, bronze in Birmingham, and now gold in Glasgow.

And then, right at the death, Chad le Clos wrote himself into the record books. Swimming the butterfly leg of the men’s 4x100m medley relay, the 34-year-old helped South Africa to bronze in 3:31.13, an African record, and in doing so claimed his 21st Commonwealth Games medal, one clear of Australia’s Emma McKeon and enough to make him the most decorated athlete in the history of the Commonwealth Games, across any sport.

Here’s how Wednesday’s six South African Swimmers medals broke down at Tollcross:

  • Pieter Coetzé — gold, men’s 100m backstroke, 51.77 (Commonwealth Games and African record, second-fastest in history). Completed his sweep of the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke titles at these Games.
  • Ruard van Renen — bronze, men’s 100m backstroke, 53.31. Part of a one-three South African finish in the same race as Coetzé’s gold.
  • Kaylene Corbett — silver, women’s 200m breaststroke, 2:24.46. Her second Commonwealth Games medal in the event, an upgrade on bronze from the last Games.
  • Christian Sadie — gold, men’s 50m freestyle S7, 28.06 (Commonwealth Games and African record). His third different-coloured medal in the event across three straight Games.
  • Women’s 4x100m medley relay (Olivia Nel, Aimee Canny, Erin Gallagher, Rebecca Meder) — bronze, 3:58.58, an African record.
  • Men’s 4x100m medley relay (Pieter Coetzé, Michael Houlie, Chad le Clos, Ruard van Renen) — bronze, 3:31.13, an African record. Le Clos’s 21st Commonwealth Games medal, making him the most decorated athlete in Games history.

By the time the water settled at Tollcross, the South African Swimmers had turned a strong campaign into a historic one. Twenty-two medals, all from the pool, and a night that will be remembered as much for the records as for the man who closed it out with a piece of history nobody will ever take off him.
