Congratulations to Jan-Hendrik Heymans who is the world under-20 javelin champion! He saved the biggest throw of his life for the moment that mattered most. The 19-year-old sealed gold at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, launching 80.50m on his final attempt to post the world U20 lead for 2026.
That last throw improved on his own fifth-round mark of 79.42m, which had already put the gold medal out of reach for the rest of the field. Nobody else in Friday’s final got within six metres of either number.

India’s Ashish Yadav took silver with 74.09m, just short of his own personal best. Dominica’s Addison James claimed bronze with 73.89m, a national U20 record for the Caribbean island.
Heymans grew up playing cricket before switching to javelin at 12, and turned 19 just three days before the championships opened at Hayward Field. He arrived in Eugene as the outright favourite off the back of a personal best of 77.14m, thrown to win the South African U20 title.
He backed that status up from the very first round of qualifying, launching 76.02m to lead the field by more than six metres. It was the only throw beyond 70 metres across the entire qualification round. Compatriot Marques Olivier also reached Friday’s final, qualifying sixth overall with 68.77m.
Friday’s gold was South Africa’s first of these championships. It followed bronze medals from shot putter Jaco van Dyk and sprinter Marko Ferreira earlier in the week, taking the country’s tally to three medals inside the opening four days in Eugene.
The world U20 record of 86.48m, set by Neeraj Chopra in 2016, remains untouched. But a throw of 80.50m puts Jan-Hendrik Heymans inside the smallest club of javelin throwers his age have ever reached, and marks him out as the man to beat over the next four years.
