Legends & Heroes Tribute – Chester Williams | 9 August 2026 | Western Province, Golden Lions & Cats · Springboks · Rugby

Yesterday, 8 August, would have been Chester Williams‘s 56th birthday. He is not here to mark it. He died of a heart attack on 6 September 2019, nearly 19 years after his final Test for South Africa. Chester Mornay Williams was born in Paarl in 1970, and across 27 Tests, a World Cup win, and two decades of coaching on three continents, he built a reputation as one of the most gifted finishers South African rugby has produced, and one of its most generous men.

PAARL, 1970

Chester Williams grew up in Paarl in the Western Cape and attended Klein Nederburg school. He came through Western Province’s junior ranks in the late 1980s and early 1990s, quickly marked out as a wing with rare finishing instincts and searing pace over the first ten metres. By his early twenties he was the most feared try-scorer in domestic rugby.

BUENOS AIRES, 13 NOVEMBER 1993

Chester Williams made his Test debut for South Africa on 13 November 1993, against Argentina at the Ferro Carril Oeste Stadium in Buenos Aires. He was 23, wearing Springbok No. 589, playing left wing. He scored a try on debut in a 52-23 win, the start of one of the most productive strike rates in world rugby at the time: 13 tries in his first 16 Tests.

Chester Williams

THE COMEBACK THAT SILENCED THE DOUBTERS

South Africa hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup, the country’s first. Chester Williams was meant to be part of the squad from the start, but injury forced him out before the pool stage. He returned for the quarter-final against Western Samoa after an injury to Pieter Hendriks opened up the wing spot, and answered every question about his place in the team the only way that mattered: he scored four tries in a 42-14 win at Ellis Park on 10 June 1995. He went on to start the semi-final against France, played in a downpour so heavy the match nearly didn’t happen, and then the final against New Zealand.

ELLIS PARK, 24 JUNE 1995

South Africa beat New Zealand 15-12 in extra time in the World Cup final on 24 June 1995, Joel Stransky’s drop goal settling it. It remains one of the great days in South African sport, and Williams, fresh off four tries in a knockout match days earlier, was central to the campaign that got the Springboks there.

THE QUIET YEARS: KNEES AND A RETURN

Knee injuries kept Chester Williams out of the Springbok side through most of 1996 and 1997. He fought his way back into the squad in 1998 and played two cameos off the bench during South Africa’s maiden Tri-Nations title win that year. He missed the 1999 World Cup entirely, but picked up a second Currie Cup that year with the Golden Lions after leaving Western Province, then returned to Test rugby in 2000, playing nine Tests while turning out for the Cats in Super Rugby.

CARDIFF, 26 NOVEMBER 2000

Williams’s final Test came on 26 November 2000, a reserve appearance in a 23-13 win over Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. He finished his Test career with 27 caps and 14 tries. He retired from playing altogether a year later, in 2001, at 30.

Chester Williams

A COACH WHO TRAVELLED THE WORLD FOR THE GAME

Chester Williams moved straight into coaching, and it’s here that the fuller picture of him comes into focus. He ran the Blitzboks, South Africa’s sevens side, from 2001 to 2003, then coached the Cats in Super Rugby from 2004 to 2005. From there he took the game to places few Springbok legends bother with: Uganda’s national team in 2006, the Mpumalanga Pumas, Tunisia’s national side from 2007 to 2012, and Romanian club RCM Timișoara from 2012 to 2013. He carried the Olympic torch for South Africa twice, at the Athens Games in 2004 and the Rio Games in 2016.

By the end of his life he was head coach at the University of the Western Cape, where he took the rugby team from the second-tier Varsity Shield into the top-flight Varsity Cup. Those who worked with him at UWC remembered him as much for his generosity and his ready smile as for his rugby knowledge, and for the way he mentored young players well beyond the game itself. A month before he died, he launched his own beer, Chester’s Lager, timed for that year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan.

CAPE TOWN, 6 SEPTEMBER 2019

Chester Williams died of a heart attack at his Cape Town home on 6 September 2019. He was 49, still coaching, still involved in the game he’d spent his whole life inside. He was married to Maria and left behind three children — Ryan, and twins Matthew and Chloe. He was given a state funeral at Newlands, where he was remembered by teammates, opponents, and the players he had coached for his warmth as much as his rugby.

Yesterday would have been his 56th birthday. From all of us at Just Plain Sport — Chester Williams finished tries like few others could, and made everyone around him feel like they mattered.
