The Hollywoodbets Sharks have been rocked by a catastrophic injury update that effectively guts their engine room and backline depth ahead of a do-or-die United Rugby Championship tour.
Eben Etzebeth, the most capped Springbok of all time, has been ruled out for the remainder of the club season with a hip injury sustained during the recent clash against Connacht. The news cratered the Durban side’s plans as they named a 28-man squad for their upcoming away fixtures against the Ospreys and Edinburgh.

Etzebeth isn’t the only casualty in what is looking like a coastal medical ward. The Sharks will also be without first-choice flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse and the dynamic duo of Bongi Mbonambi and Grant Williams for the rest of the campaign.
With Williams set for a move to Japan next season, the Bok scrumhalf may have played his final minutes in the black and white jersey. The fullback position has become a literal crisis point; with Aphelele Fassi sidelined and his understudies Luan Giliomee, Hakeem Kunene, and Jaco Williams all out, JP Pietersen has been forced to call up SA Schools star Zekhethelo Siyaya to fill the void.
There is a silver lining with the return of Andre Esterhuizen and Bok skipper Siya Kolisi, who is entering his final stretch as a Shark before returning to the Stormers. However, sitting seven points off the top eight, the Durbanites have zero margin for error.
They need a clean sweep on tour to keep their Investec Champions Cup qualification hopes alive, but doing so without their enforcer and halfback pairing is a massive ask.
