The 2026 rugby sevens season has reached its most exciting phase! Following the conclusion of the regular SVNS Series in New York—where the Blitzboks (Men) and Black Ferns (Women) were crowned League winners—the circuit now transitions into a standalone World Championship.
For fans and viewers, it is essential to understand that while the League phase served as the qualifying road, the race for the World Champion title is a separate mission that begins now.

THE THREE-EVENT STRUCTURE
Unlike the regular season, the World Championship is a condensed, three-stop sprint.
The team with the most cumulative points at the end of these three events will be crowned the 2026 World Champion:
- ROUND 1:
Hong Kong (17–19 April) – Kai Tak Stadium, Kai Tak Sports Park. (50th anniversary of the iconic Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens – the spiritual home of world sevens!) - ROUND 2:
Valladolid, Spain (29-31 May) – Estadio José Zorrilla. - ROUND 3:
Bordeaux, France (5-7 June) – Stade Atlantique.
THE QUALIFIED TEAMS (12 per gender)
The regular season was the battleground for qualification. Eight core teams from the SVNS Series join four qualifiers who earned their spot via the SVNS 2 tier:
- MEN’S TEAMS:
Argentina, Australia, Fiji, France, Germany, Great Britain, Kenya, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Uruguay, USA. - WOMEN’S TEAMS:
Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Fiji, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa (Springbok Women), Spain, USA.
These 24 teams (12 men + 12 women) will battle it out in a true merit-based showdown.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT AND KNOCKOUTS
Every weekend features 12 teams per gender, organized into three pools of four. The progression to the finals is merit-based:
- POOL STAGE:
Every team plays three matches within their group. - QUARTER-FINALS:
The top two teams from each pool, along with the two best third-placed finishers overall, advance to the 8-team Cup Quarter-Finals. - THE PATH TO GOLD:
Quarter-Final winners move to the Semi-Finals, followed by the Gold Medal Final. - SCORING AND RESULTS:
Matches consist of two seven-minute halves. In the knockout stages, a draw is not possible; if scores are level at full-time, the game enters Golden Point extra time, where the first team to score wins immediately.
CUMULATIVE LOG AND WORLD TITLE
Points are awarded based on a team’s final finishing position at each of the three tournaments. 1st place receives the maximum points, while 12th place receives the minimum.
These points are tallied across Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux. The team at the summit of this three-event log becomes the undisputed 2026 HSBC SVNS World Champion (separate titles for men and women).
CORE STATUS: PROMOTION AND RELEGATION
The World Championship also serves as the final determination for core status in the 2027 season.
The 12 competing teams include the 8 core teams from the regular season and 4 Challenger teams (the back-door qualifiers) who earned their place via the SVNS 2 tier.
- SURVIVAL:
The top 8 teams on the final World Championship log secure their place on the main SVNS circuit for 2027. - RELEGATION:
The bottom 4 teams are relegated to the SVNS 2 tier. - OPPORTUNITY:
This allows the four qualifiers—such as the Springbok Women or Kenya’s Men—to earn permanent professional status if they outperform the established giants over these three weekends.
This system ensures that every match, from the opening pool game in Hong Kong to the final whistle in Bordeaux, carries direct consequences for both championship glory and professional survival.
WHY THIS FORMAT IS A GAME-CHANGER
For the first time, the season ends with a high-stakes triple-header instead of a long cumulative grind. Every weekend resets the pressure — one bad day can cost a team their core status, while a Cinderella run by a challenger side can rewrite the future of the sport.
Hong Kong kicks it all off in front of massive crowds at the brand-new Kai Tak Stadium. Valladolid and Bordeaux then deliver a European double-header finale where the World Champions (and 2027 cores) will be decided.
