Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Glasgow — Friday 24 July 2026

Pieter Coetzé needed 24.45 seconds on Friday morning to announce that South Africa had arrived at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The 22-year-old backstroke world champion won his heat of the men’s 50m backstroke in a Commonwealth Games record, the fastest qualifying time of the morning, and did it with the unhurried air of a swimmer who has plenty left in reserve. Behind Pieter Coetzé, compatriot Ruard van Renen touched in 24.78 to qualify second fastest overall, giving Team SA the two quickest men in the field heading into the evening semi-finals.

It was the opening morning of the swimming programme, and it belonged largely to the green and gold.

Beyond the backstroke, South Africa put swimmers into three more semi-final line-ups and two relay finals. Michael Houlie and Chris Smith both finished second in their respective men’s 100m breaststroke heats, Houlie in 1:00.14 and Smith in 1:00.86, advancing fourth and eighth fastest.

In the women’s 50m butterfly, Erin Gallagher led a Team SA one-two in her heat, touching in 25.70 for the second-fastest time of the session, with Caitlin de Lange second in 26.34. Jessica Thompson won her own heat in 26.24, leaving three South Africans in the semi-final field.

The relays were where the medal maths began to look interesting. In the men’s 4x100m freestyle, the quartet of Kris Mihaylov, Guy Brooks, Ruard van Renen and Chad le Clos finished second in their heat in 3:18.14 to qualify fourth fastest for the final. The women’s team of Georgia Nel, Rebecca Meder, Jessica Thompson and Caitlin de Lange came third in their heat in 3:43.87, good enough for fifth into the final and squarely in podium contention.

Not every swim went South Africa’s way, and one of them will sting for a while. Hannah Pearse finished third in her women’s 200m backstroke heat in 2:12.37, ninth overall, one hundredth of a second away from a place in the final. It is difficult to imagine a crueller margin.

In the women’s 400m freestyle, Dune Coetzee clocked 4:14.93 for twelfth on the timesheets and Hannah Robertson 4:19.58 for eighteenth, both outside the eight-strong final. Kris Mihaylov’s 2:03.57 in the men’s 200m individual medley left him short of the cut.

South Africa’s para swimmers may yet provide the day’s most concrete return. Nathan Hendricks was second in his heat of the men’s S13 100m freestyle in 56.66, qualifying second fastest for the final and installing himself as a genuine medal candidate. In the women’s S13 100m freestyle, Danika Vyncke came third in her heat in 1:05.13 to go through third fastest, with Alani Ferreira also through to the final.

“It’s awesome to see how Pieter Coetzé rewrote the record books while barely breaking a sweat. It sets the tone for for an exciting six days in the pool !” – 🎙️Jay

Friday evening at Tollcross is where the morning’s work gets converted, or doesn’t. The para swimming finals open proceedings, with Ferreira and Vyncke in the women’s S13 100m freestyle and Hendricks in the men’s, both scheduled shortly after 19:20 BST (20:20 in South Africa). Pieter Coetzé and van Renen then contest the 50m backstroke semi-finals, followed by the women’s 50m butterfly semis and the men’s 100m breaststroke semis.

The evening closes with the women’s and men’s 4x100m freestyle finals in quick succession, both featuring South African teams.

The men’s relay carries a subplot of its own. Le Clos, competing at his fifth Commonwealth Games at 34, arrived in Glasgow tied on 18 career Commonwealth medals with Australian shooter Phillip Adams and England’s Mick Gault, the most won by any male athlete in the history of the Games. One more podium finish, in any event, stands him alone.

He has six days of racing to find it. On the evidence of Friday morning, he will not be short of company on the way there.

All times BST unless stated. South African time is one hour ahead.
