Leendert Koekemoer ran the fastest 400m of anyone in the field on Sunday, and he wasn’t even in the individual final. His 44.35 anchor leg dragged South Africa’s 4x400m quartet under a decade-old African U20 record and into silver at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Ryno Riekert, Kryn Romijn and Abelines Schoeman built the platform, running 46.67, 46.38 and 45.36 in turn to hand Leendert Koekemoer the baton in medal position. What he did with it separated South Africa from the rest of the field. His split wasn’t just the best of the South African four; it was the quickest recorded by any athlete across every team in the final.

The finished time of 3:02.76 shaved 0.05 seconds off the previous African U20 record of 3:02.81, set by Botswana back in 2016. Leendert Koekemoer had already banked individual 400m bronze earlier in the championships in 44.96, meaning the relay silver was his second medal of the week and his most decisive contribution.
Riekert, Romijn and Schoeman are each newer names on this stage, but they ran the race exactly as it needed to be run — building pace leg by leg and giving their anchor a lead worth defending. Leendert Koekemoer made sure it stayed that way all the way to the line.
The United States won gold in a world U20-leading 3:01.39, with Quincy Wilson, Cameron Tucker, Alexander Osayemi and Jayden DeLeon defending their title for a third straight championship. DeLeon’s individual 400m gold in 44.47 had set a championship record, with Wilson taking silver in 44.62. France took bronze in a national U20 record of 3:04.80, more than two seconds behind the South Africans.
South Africa left Eugene with eight medals in total — one gold, three silver, four bronze — their second-largest haul at this championship. None carried more weight than the one Leendert Koekemoer sealed on the final leg.
