KWAGGA HEADING TO PRETORIA ON THREE-YEAR BULLS DEAL

Published:

Kwagga Smith has signed a three-year contract with the Vodacom Bulls, the Pretoria franchise confirmed on 25 October, ending eight seasons in Japan and bringing the 33-year-old Springbok loose forward back into South African rugby for the first time since 2018.

The announcement came five days after the Shizuoka Blue Revs confirmed that he and the club had agreed to end his contract by mutual consent.

It puts him back under Johan Ackermann, who coached him at the Lions before he left for Japan in July 2018 and is now in charge at the Bulls.

“Playing under Johan Ackermann [previously] was one of my best experiences.” – Kwagga Smith

When Will Kwagga Smith Play For The Bulls?

Not this year. Smith tore his ACL and meniscus in May while playing for the Blue Revs, an injury that ended his 2026 season and ruled him out of the Springboks’ international programme.

The Bulls say medical clearance for full-contact rugby is set for late December, which puts his first appearance in their colours early in 2027.

The timing suits him for a second reason. In the Bulls’ own announcement Smith said his wife is pregnant and due in January, and that the move home lands at the right moment for his family.

He has been running again for some weeks, and said in the same release that he misses the game and feels good.

Eight Seasons At The Shizuoka Blue Revs

Smith joined Yamaha Jubilo, later rebranded the Shizuoka Blue Revs, for the 2018-19 Top League season and never moved on.

The club’s own player listing puts him at 81 appearances across league and cup rugby. He grew into one of its senior figures and served as co-captain.

He was named in the Best XV twice in the Top League era and three times in League One, and his fellow professionals voted him League One Player of the Season in 2022-23.

His last match in Japan was on 9 May 2026, when he scored a try in a 42-15 win over the Yokohama Canon Eagles.

What He Brings Back

Smith arrives with 63 Test caps and 11 tries for the Springboks, and medals from both of the last two Rugby World Cups, in Japan in 2019 and in France in 2023.

He has three Rugby Championship titles, from 2019, 2024 and 2025, and a Currie Cup winner’s medal with the Golden Lions from 2015.

Before any of that there were 158 appearances and 310 points for the Blitzboks between 2013 and 2017, a Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow in 2014 and an Olympic bronze in Rio in 2016.

“Wherever he goes, he makes a difference.” – Johan Ackermann

Blue Bulls Company chief executive Edgar Rathbone described the signing as a proven winner who has won almost everything the game offers and still has his hunger, and pointed to the work rate and physicality the Bulls want in their pack.

Where He Fits In A Crowded Back Row

The loose-forward group he walks into:

  • Marcell Coetzee, captain
  • Cameron Hanekom
  • Elrigh Louw
  • Marco van Staden

Smith covers openside flanker and number 8, the two positions he has filled for the Springboks since his debut against Wales in Washington DC in June 2018.
