There are cricketers who go quiet when a game gets tight. And then there are those a team turns to precisely because it’s tight. Tristan Stubbs belongs firmly in the second category. Born on August 14, 2000, in Johannesburg, he turns 26 today.
TWO CITIES, ONE CAREER
Tristan Stubbs spent his first years in Johannesburg, where the Stubbs family lived in the suburb of Honeydew, before relocating to the coastal town of Knysna in the Western Cape when Tristan was around seven or eight.
His father, Chris Stubbs, played provincial-level hockey and later worked as a marine sales manager; his mother, Mandy, runs an outdoor adventure business, Knysna Hike and Bike. Cricket, hockey and golf all competed for his attention as a boy, and hockey came first — young Tristan practised with an oversized stick in the family backyard, following his father’s lead.
Chris Stubbs eventually steered his son toward cricket, reasoning that South African hockey offered little professional future. It proved to be the right call. Stubbs was schooled at Grey High School in Gqeberha, where he captained the first XI, and the shift from Johannesburg’s inland sprawl to Knysna’s lagoon and forest gave him the environment, and the local competition, to sharpen a game built on power and improvisation.
CAPTAIN AT SEVENTEEN, CONTRACTED AT TWENTY-ONE
Stubbs captained the Eastern Province Under-19 side at the 2018 Khaya Majola Week, leading them past Free State and winning the Best Batsman award with 288 runs at an average of 72. He made his first-class debut for Eastern Province in January 2020 and his T20 debut for the Warriors in 2021, building a reputation for hitting the ball to all parts of the ground with an unusually long reach.
By May 2022, that reputation had reached India. Mumbai Indians signed Tristan Stubbs as an injury replacement for Tymal Mills — a full three weeks before he had played a single match for South Africa. He made his T20I debut against India that June and his ODI debut against West Indies the following March. His Mumbai stint brought limited opportunity and modest returns, but the door had opened. In 2023, Sunrisers Eastern Cape made him the most expensive buy in the inaugural SA20 auction at R9.2 million, a deal Stubbs later described as buying him the freedom to prioritise rest and focus on fewer leagues.
THE OMISSION THAT SHOCKED SOUTH AFRICA
Tristan Stubbs made his Test debut in January 2024, in the shortest completed Test match in history, and within weeks answered any lingering doubts with a maiden first-class triple century — 302 not out for the Warriors against KwaZulu-Natal Inland, built on a 473-run stand with Matthew Breetzke, the sixth-highest third-wicket partnership in first-class history. A breakout IPL season with Delhi Capitals followed, and by mid-2024 coach Shukri Conrad was backing him for the Test No. 3 spot.
Then form deserted him. Tristan Stubbs managed only 152 T20I runs in seven innings through 2025 at an average of 21.71, struggled badly against spin, and was left out of a Champions Trophy match against Afghanistan entirely on current form rather than injury. When South Africa named their squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup on January 2, Stubbs was not on it — a decision that drew immediate criticism given his standing in the side.
THIRD TITLE, FIRST AS CAPTAIN
South Africa did not wait long to see a response. Sunrisers Eastern Cape had already handed Tristan Stubbs the SA20 captaincy in September 2025, replacing the departing Aiden Markram, and coach Adrian Birrell backed a local Gqeberha man to lead with passion over reputation. Weeks after his international omission, Stubbs led Sunrisers to their third title in four seasons, striking an unbeaten 63 off 41 balls in the final in Cape Town alongside a match-defining stand with Breetzke.
The timing mattered. On January 22, injuries to Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira forced South Africa to recall Stubbs to the T20 World Cup squad, a reversal the press openly noted had followed weeks of criticism over his original snub. He arrived in India as a captain who had just won a trophy, not a batter fighting to save his career.
THE SIX THAT FORCED A SECOND SUPER OVER
On February 11 in Ahmedabad, South Africa and Afghanistan tied their Group D match at 187 apiece, sending the game to a Super Over. Stubbs managed just one run off two balls as Afghanistan set South Africa 18 to win. Needing seven off the final delivery, he launched Fazalhaq Farooqi over long-off for six, tying the scores again and forcing the first-ever double Super Over in T20 World Cup history. In the second Super Over, Tristan Stubbs and David Miller put on 23 without loss, and South Africa held on to win by four runs.
Former Proteas quick Dale Steyn called it one of the craziest matches he had ever seen; the cricket press summed it up as the old Tristan Stubbs being back. Six weeks earlier, South Africa hadn’t wanted him in the squad at all.
That moment sits alongside a broader team achievement already on his CV: Tristan Stubbs was part of the South African XI that beat Australia at Lord’s in June 2025 to win the World Test Championship, the country’s first ICC title in 27 years.
THE FINISHER WHO KEEPS FINISHING
Tristan Stubbs remains Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s captain heading into SA20 Season 5, defending a title he delivered in his first year with the armband. He is contracted to Delhi Capitals, for whom he hit the winning six in a Super Over against Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 IPL, and in August he was named Player of the Match for Southern Brave in The Hundred, striking an unbeaten 52 off 28 balls to end Trent Rockets’ six-match winning run. Four franchises, three formats, one job description: bat when nobody else wants to.
