The Lions turned a half-time deficit into a bonus-point win at Ellis Park, running in five tries after the break to beat Ospreys 35–19. Lions vs Ospreys in Round 2 of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship was settled in a 25-point spell the visitors had no answer to.
Ospreys had done the harder work before the interval. Trailing 10–0, they finished the first half in front and looked the side more likely to kick on.
Chris Smith opened the scoring with a penalty from about 40 metres on 11 minutes, after Ospreys conceded two early scrum penalties. The Lions’ lineout was messy in the same spell, PJ Botha missing twice near the Ospreys line.
Erich Cronje finished the first try on 27 minutes, assisted by JC Pretorius, and Smith converted for 10–0.
Ospreys answered through the backline. Kieran Hardy broke, Evardi Boshoff carried and offloaded, and inside centre Keiran Williams scored. Dan Edwards converted on 34 minutes to make it 10–7.
In first-half injury time Edwards kicked to the corner and the Ospreys maul shoved hooker Efan Daniel over. The touchline conversion slid wide. Half-time: Lions 10–12.
“The Lions had a sloppy first half, but it was great to see how they exploded in the second half with urgency!” – 🎙️Jay
HOW LIONS VS OSPREYS WAS WON AFTER THE BREAK
The second half flipped inside two minutes. Botha scored from a Lions maul on 42 minutes and Smith struck the right-hand upright. Lions vs Ospreys was level on tries at that point, two apiece.
The front row was then replaced — SJ Kotze, RF Schoeman and Morne Brandon for Boan Venter, Sebastian Lombard and Botha — and Brandon scored on 48 minutes. Fullback Boeta Chamberlain crossed on 56.

Edwards was shown yellow on 60. Wing Kelly Mpeku punished the extra space with unconverted tries on 62 and 65, 10 points in the spell Ospreys spent down to 14 men.
Quan Horn replaced Cronje just after the second of those, and Dylan Sjoblom came on for Etienne Oosthuizen on 67. Springbok scrumhalf Morne van den Berg had replaced Nico Steyn on 58.
Ospreys had the last word and nothing else. Replacement Ross Moriarty scored on 82 minutes and Edwards, back from the bin, converted on 83. Full-time: 35–19.
Six tries secured the try bonus, the extra log point a side earns for scoring four or more in a match. Ospreys, beaten by 16, missed the losing bonus point, which goes to a side that loses by seven or fewer.
“The scoreline is flattering the Ospreys, as the kickers struggled today and added almost no points to the score!” – 🎙️Jay
The split makes that plain. The Lions scored 30 points from their six tries and only 5 from the tee: Smith’s penalty and the Cronje conversion.
They left 10 points out there in five missed conversions, including the post on Botha. Ospreys scored 15 from their three tries and 4 from the tee, Edwards landing two from three and leaving 2 points on Daniel’s missed conversion.
Perfect kicking from both sides makes it 45–21, a 24-point margin instead of 16.
Italian referee Filippo Russo, in his 10th United Rugby Championship match, had an awkward afternoon in the middle. He was often hard to follow on the referee microphone, and more than once looked unsure of the picture in front of him before settling on a decision.
The whistle never found a clear rhythm. Both packs spent long spells waiting on explanations, and the flow of the game suffered for it.
Captain Francke Horn’s side, who edged Leinster 27–26 on this ground on 26 September, have a second successive home win and the four-try bonus from a Lions vs Ospreys fixture that gave them everything on offer.
Ospreys, beaten 41–24 by the Sharks in Durban on the same day, leave South Africa with nothing on the log from the trip. The last Ellis Park meeting between these sides, in May 2025, went to the Lions 29–28.
