RYAN OOSTHUIZEN: LAWYER, LEADER, BLITZBOK LEGEND

Today, 22 May, the Blitzboks family celebrates one of its most decorated, most dependable, and most admired servants. Ryan Oosthuizen turns 31 today, and as he blows out the candles, there is a career’s worth of silverware, sweat, and unforgettable memories to reflect on.

Born in Stellenbosch in 1995, Oosthuizen grew up in the heart of Western Cape rugby country. He attended Paarl Gimnasium — one of South Africa’s great rugby nurseries — before progressing through Western Province age groups.

He would go on to study at both Stellenbosch University and the University of South Africa (UNISA), pursuing a law degree alongside his professional rugby career. That is the thing about Ryan Oosthuizen: the rugby field is only one part of who he is. He is a qualified lawyer — an educated, sharp-minded professional who has chosen to pour his energy into the green and gold of the Blitzboks for now, and South African rugby is all the richer for it.

From the Classroom to the World Stage

Oosthuizen’s rugby journey took him from Western Province’s youth structures into the Springbok Sevens system, where he made his senior international debut at the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens. He was immediately part of something special — that same season, the Blitzboks won the 2016–17 World Rugby Sevens Series, and Oosthuizen was along for the ride right from the start.

What followed over the next nine years was a career of remarkable consistency and achievement. A powerful forward who plays centre in the 15-man game, Oosthuizen brings physicality, work rate, and an unshakeable competitive spirit to every team he represents. He is not the loudest voice in the room, but he is one of the most respected.

“Some of us have been playing for this team since 2016 and we have several guys with multiple caps, so we know each other well. That will help us out of tight spots.” – Ryan Oosthuizen

A Trophy Cabinet That Speaks for Itself

The statistics tell only part of the story, but they are impressive nonetheless. Across 60+ HSBC SVNS tournaments, Oosthuizen has scored 52 tries for the Blitzboks — an extraordinary return for a forward — and accumulated 260+ career points. He has won the Dubai Sevens tournament six times, making the UAE desert one of his personal hunting grounds.

His career HSBC SVNS tournament win tally stands at over 11 — a number most players in the world could only dream of. He was part of the Blitzbok squad that claimed the 2016–17 World Series title, and most recently was a key member of the side that won the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles in May 2025 — a moment that crowned one of the finest seasons in recent Blitzbok history.

He also represented South Africa at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco, where the Blitzboks claimed a bronze medal, and was named in the squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics — a third successive charge at Olympic gold for the programme, and a testament to the trust the coaching staff place in him.

The Man Behind the Player

What makes Ryan Oosthuizen’s story so compelling is the person behind the achievements. He is described by teammates and coaches alike as one of the senior leaders in the squad — quiet, grounded, team-first. When the Blitzboks went through a difficult 2023–24 season, it was Oosthuizen who stood up and held the group accountable.

Ryan Oosthuizen

“We can’t hide from the fact that we underperformed last season — we just did not deliver the results we are capable of,” he said publicly, with the honesty and self-awareness that defines his character. No excuses. Just a commitment to doing better.

His resilience has been tested too. He was concussed early in the 2025 Dubai Sevens, ruled out of that tournament and the Cape Town leg that followed — forced to watch from the stands as his teammates celebrated a historic home win. He came back stronger.

The fact that he balanced a law degree with one of the most demanding schedules in professional sport speaks volumes. Ryan Oosthuizen is the kind of person who raises the bar — on the field and off it.

Still Hungry, Still Delivering

At 31, there is no sign of Oosthuizen slowing down. In the 2026 HSBC SVNS Series, he delivered one of the performances of his career in the final in Perth — scoring two tries as the Blitzboks edged Fiji 21–19 to claim their second tournament win of the season. Head coach Philip Snyman described him afterwards as a player who holds the team to its highest standards.

“It is great to be back and I am looking forward to what is still to come,” Oosthuizen said after the Perth win. “The job is not done.” That mentality — hungry, humble, relentless — is exactly what has made Ryan Oosthuizen one of the great Blitzboks of his generation.

Ryan Oosthuizen

Happy Birthday, Ryan
