Nike and SA Rugby unveiled the new Springbok jersey on Wednesday, and it lands right as the real story starts to take shape: this is a war, not a rugby tour. Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry brings the All Blacks to South Africa for eight matches across six weeks — four against the country’s United Rugby Championship franchises, then four Tests against the Springboks.
Nobody in green and gold, at any level, is planning to make it easy.
The tour opens 7 August with the Stormers in Cape Town, then the Sharks in Durban on 11 August, the Bulls in Pretoria on 15 August, and the Lions in Johannesburg on 25 August — sandwiched around the first Test at Ellis Park on 22 August.
The history working against the All Blacks is brutal: no South African provincial side has beaten them on home soil since 1976, when Orange Free State, Northern Transvaal and Western Province all did it inside a single tour. That’s the last time it happened. Every URC franchise this year gets a shot at ending a 50-year wait.

The Springbok jersey itself is built for that fight. Classic green and gold, Springbok emblem front and centre, constructed on Nike’s FIT ADV platform — lightweight materials, athlete-tested, engineered for the speed and control Test rugby demands.
There’s a tone-on-tone detail too: the lyrics of Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika, printed in the shape of the South African flag, carrying the anthem in Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Afrikaans and English. SA Rugby says it represents the convergence of the country’s voices, histories and communities — a smaller detail, sitting underneath the bigger one, which is the emblem itself.
“Wow, what a gorgeous Springbok jersey! I want one!!” – 🎙️Jay
Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby, framed the jersey as a direct extension of what the tour means.
Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby:
“This truly is a Tour like no other and so is this jersey. Nike have outdone themselves in developing a design that speaks directly and honestly to the motivation of the team and management — they play for the people of South Africa and wear their hearts on their sleeve; now they will wear the words of the anthem on their chests.”

The official Springboks account put it simply:
Springboks (official):
“The green and gold evolves with each generation, proving that true legacy isn’t preserved. It’s reinvented.”
Siya Kolisi went further:
Siya Kolisi:
“I’ve no doubt this is going to be something huge and something this generation will never forget.”
That’s the scale of what’s coming. Four URC franchises with five decades of history to settle, then a Springbok side carrying a 30-year wait for a full Test series against New Zealand — the first since 1996, and the first time these two nations have played a fourth Test outside their own countries, in Baltimore.
Ellis Park hosts the opener on 22 August, DHL Stadium the second Test, FNB Stadium the third, and Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium the finale. This Springbok jersey only gets worn across those four Tests, before it goes back into the archive for good.
The Springbok jersey goes on general sale Thursday, 6 August, at three price points through Nike stores and Nike.com, the Springbok retail stores in Sandton, Menlyn Park and Canal Walk, and other authorised sports retailers — a day before the Stormers open the tour against the All Blacks in Cape Town.
