Rassie Erasmus has confirmed his Springboks team to face Argentina, and five recovering stalwarts are about to find out whether their bodies can still do what their names suggest.
Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, captain Siya Kolisi and Morne van den Berg all return from injury in the match-23 named for Saturday’s Test against Los Pumas at Estadio José Amalfitani in Buenos Aires. It’s their first involvement of the 2026 international season, and Erasmus isn’t hiding why he’s picked this fixture to reintroduce them.
Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, the four-Test series against New Zealand, is coming. Before that gets underway, Erasmus needs proof that his walking wounded can survive 80 minutes against a Pumas side that has already handed the Springboks two of their toughest results in recent years.
That’s the real story behind this Springboks team to face Argentina. It isn’t only about who’s fit enough to be picked. It’s about who’s fit enough to be trusted with what comes next.
The starting side shows 13 changes from the team that beat Wales 43-0 in Durban, and it features a completely new pack. Boan Venter and Thomas du Toit pack down either side of Johan Grobbelaar in the front row, while Etzebeth partners de Jager at lock for the first time this year. Kolisi, Elrigh Louw and Cameron Hanekom form the loose trio.
Cobus Reinach and Feinberg-Mngomezulu control the halves. Andre Esterhuizen partners Canan Moodie in midfield, and Ethan Hooker, Edwill van der Merwe and Aphelele Fassi make up the back three. Esterhuizen and Hooker both picked up niggles during last month’s Nations Championship and return alongside the longer-term injury cases.
Only two players from the Wales starting XV keep their places in this Springboks team to face Argentina: Fassi at fullback and Reinach at scrumhalf. Five more survivors from that win — Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Ben-Jason Dixon, Marco van Staden, Cobus Wiese and Gerhard Steenekamp — drop to the bench.

Erasmus framed the selection around exactly that logic. “This match is the perfect occasion for players like Siya, Eben, Lood, Sacha, Morne and the other players returning from injury to get a tough Test under the belt and get back into full swing at international level, as Argentina are a formidable team, who will push us to the limit,” he said.
He wasn’t understating it. Erasmus pointed to the shared identity between the two nations as the reason this fixture works as a proving ground: “The Argentineans are very similar to South Africans in many ways. Their passion and patriotism for their country and people, and the way they give everything on the field and keep fighting is a testament to the type of Test match we are expecting this weekend.”
He also flagged the danger directly. “They have beaten us twice in Argentina before and they delivered brave performances in their Nations Championship matches, and will have a point to prove on Saturday, so we are fully aware of the challenge ahead.”
The numbers back that caution up. The Springboks have won 35 of 40 meetings with Argentina at 87.5%, but both defeats on Argentine soil — Mendoza in 2018 and a 29-28 loss in Santiago del Estero in 2024 — sting for exactly that reason. The Springboks remain unbeaten in Buenos Aires specifically since 1993, though the margins there have rarely been comfortable.
There’s a personal milestone buried inside this Springbok team to face Argentina too. Etzebeth already holds the record as South Africa’s most-capped player, and Saturday’s appearance will push that tally to 142 Tests. He’ll reach it in a pack he hasn’t started alongside since before this run of injuries began.
Add it all up and the collective experience in this Springboks group is significant. The starting XV carries 541 Test caps between them — 157 in the backline, 384 among the forwards — with a further 176 caps waiting on the bench. That’s an average of 22 caps per back, 48 per forward, and 22 per replacement.
Kickoff at Estadio José Amalfitani is 21h10 South African time on Saturday, 8 August, live on SuperSport. Felipe Contepomi’s side arrive with their own point to prove after a competitive Nations Championship campaign, and Erasmus rated the threat highly: “They have a strong forward pack and dangerous backs, and they will have a very passionate crowd behind them, so we will have to be at our best to win this match.”
For Etzebeth, de Jager, Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Kolisi and van den Berg, Saturday isn’t really about Argentina at all. It’s the last exam before New Zealand.
