Birthday Tribute – Theo van Rensburg | 26 August 2026 | Transvaal · Springboks · Rugby

Happy Birthday to Jan Theodorus Jansen van Rensburg, born on 26 August 1967 in Carletonville, 59 today.

Ellis Park, 15 August 1992. Seventy-two thousand people, the All Blacks playing an official Test in South Africa for the first time since 1976, and a country walking back into world rugby with no idea what it would find there. The number 15 jersey that afternoon belonged to a 1.77m, 78kg fullback from a gold-mining town on the West Rand, eleven days short of Theo van Rensburg’s 25th birthday.

He is Springbok 558. Whatever else the record says, that afternoon cannot be taken off it.

CARLETONVILLE, AND THE FULLBACK POTCHEFSTROOM GIMNASIUM PRODUCED

Carletonville is a mining town, built on the deepest gold workings in the world, and it is not a place that has sent many players into the Springbok side. Theo van Rensburg went to school at Potchefstroom Gimnasium, one of the great Afrikaans rugby schools of the platteland, and played Craven Week for Western Transvaal in 1984 and 1985.

Theo van Rensburg was small for a fullback even then. What he had instead was a kicking boot, a safe pair of hands under the high ball, and the temperament that goes with both.

Western Transvaal was not a launchpad. He had to leave to be seen.

NORTHERN TRANSVAAL 1989, AND ONE OF FIVE YOUNG PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

Theo van Rensburg made his senior provincial debut for Northern Transvaal in 1989, in a Pretoria side thick with international-class players and short of places. By 1990 he was named one of South Africa’s five Young Players of the Year, alongside Andrew Aitken, Jannie Claassens, Bernard Fourie and Ian MacDonald.

It was recognition without a destination. South Africa was still banned, and there was no Springbok side to be picked for — only trials, tours that never left, and provincial rugby played at test intensity in front of full houses.

He moved to Transvaal for 1992. That was the year the door opened.

15 AUGUST 1992: NO POINTS, AND THE ONLY CAP THAT NEEDED NONE

South Africa lost the Return Test 27-24. Danie Gerber scored twice, Pieter Muller once, and the Springboks came back at New Zealand hard enough late on to make the scoreline respectable in a match most people expected to be a humiliation.

Theo van Rensburg did not score. Naas Botha was still in the side and still doing the kicking.

A week later, at Newlands, Australia beat South Africa 26-3 — the world champions dismantling a side that had not played test rugby in eight years. In November he was at Twickenham for a 33-16 defeat to England. Three caps, three losses, and no points on the board.

Then Botha retired, and the kicking became his job.

22 MAY 1993: TRANSVAAL 20, AUCKLAND 17, AND THE FIRST SUPER 10 FINAL

Kitch Christie took over at Transvaal and built the hardest side in South African rugby around François Pienaar, Uli Schmidt and a fullback who did his damage without ever raising his voice.

The first Super 10 final was played at Ellis Park on 22 May 1993, against an Auckland side carrying Sean Fitzpatrick, Zinzan Brooke, Va’aiga Tuigamala and Grant Fox — the best provincial team on earth.

Transvaal won 20-17. Schmidt scored twice, Pienaar once, and Theo van Rensburg kicked a conversion and a penalty in a match decided by three points.

  • 1993 Super 10 champions, beating Auckland in the inaugural final
  • 1993 Currie Cup champions, with Natal beaten in the final
  • Two trophies in one season, under the coach who would win the World Cup two years later

That was the season South African fans actually watched him in. Seven Springbok caps is the thin part of the record; the Transvaal jersey is the part Ellis Park remembers.

1993: FIFTEEN OF TWENTY IN DURBAN, TWELVE OF SEVENTEEN AT ELLIS PARK

France came out in June and Theo van Rensburg carried the Springbok scoreboard on his own for two Saturdays.

  • 26 June 1993, Kings Park, Durban: five penalties in a 20-20 draw — 15 of South Africa’s 20 points, with Uli Schmidt’s try the other five
  • 3 July 1993, Ellis Park: four penalties in an 18-17 defeat — 12 of South Africa’s 17 points, with James Small’s try the other five
  • Across both tests: nine penalties, 27 points, and not one point from anyone else’s boot

Two matches, no wins, and a fullback who had missed almost nothing. South African rugby in 1993 was a side rebuilding in public and losing while it did it, and the man at the back was the reason the margins stayed at one point and none.

SYDNEY, 31 JULY 1993: THE ONE HE WON

Four weeks later the Springboks opened a three-test series in Australia at the Sydney Football Stadium, against the world champions, on their own ground.

They won 19-12. James Small scored twice, Pieter Muller once, and Theo van Rensburg kicked two conversions.

South Africa then lost in Brisbane 28-20 and again in Sydney 19-12, and the series went 2-1 to Australia. The opener remained the only test victory of his career. Seven caps, one win, one draw, five defeats — a record that says almost nothing about the player and everything about the years he was handed. He never scored a test try.

ATHLETIC PARK, 23 JULY 1994: THE REPLACEMENT WHO KEPT THE JERSEY

The 1994 tour of New Zealand under Ian McIntosh was brutal work: ten wins from eleven provincial matches, two test defeats and a draw. André Joubert wore 15 in the first test at Carisbrook on 9 July, a 22-14 defeat. Theo van Rensburg came in for the second test at Athletic Park in Wellington on 23 July, kicked three penalties in a 13-9 loss, and was injured late in the match.

The man who came on for him was Joubert.

Joubert took the number 15 jersey back and never gave it up. He held it through the rest of the tour, through 1995, and through the World Cup final at Ellis Park with a hand broken against Western Samoa and strapped into a lightweight cast. Theo van Rensburg never played another test. He was 26 years old.

  • First test: 15 August 1992, New Zealand, Ellis Park
  • Last test: 23 July 1994, New Zealand, Athletic Park
  • 7 caps, 40 test points — 12 penalties and 2 conversions, no tries
  • 142 points in 15 Springbok tour matches: 7 tries, 19 conversions, 22 penalties, 1 drop goal

FOUR UNIONS, ONE FRENCH SEASON, AND A CAREER SPENT MOVING

Theo van Rensburg went back to Northern Transvaal in 1995 and played on afterwards for Eastern Province and South Western Districts, with a spell in France at FC Grenoble along the way — four senior provincial jerseys, from Pretoria to the Southern Cape, and a passport stamp on top.

That is a career of a particular kind: never the untouchable incumbent, always good enough to be wanted somewhere, and the man a coach called when the goalkicking had to be reliable next Saturday.

The Springbok years that were taken from Theo van Rensburg were taken by an isolation he had no part in and an injury he did not choose. What he was left with was seven caps at the exact hinge of South African rugby history — the side that walked out at Ellis Park in 1992 and the side that lifted the World Cup there in 1995 are separated by an almost complete change of personnel, and he was in the first one and not the second.

From all of us at Just Plain Sport — you were the man kicking South Africa’s points in the seasons nobody wanted to remember, and the scoreboard from Durban and Ellis Park in 1993 still has your name all over it. 🎂🏉
