Birthday Tribute | Wilco Louw | 20 July 2026 | Bulls · Springboks · Rugby

There are props who scrummage hard for eighty minutes and are forgotten by Monday. And then there are those a national coach names specifically when explaining a selection call. Wilco Louw belongs firmly in the second category. Born on 20 July 1994, in Ceres, in the Western Cape, he turns 32 today.

THE CERES VALLEY AND THE BOLAND PATHWAY

Wilco Mario Louw grew up in the Ceres Valley, in the Cape Winelands region where his family still farms. He was schooled at HTS Drostdy in Worcester, and it was there that his rugby began drawing attention beyond the Boland borders. In 2012, he represented Boland at the Craven Week schools tournament, performances strong enough to earn a place in the SA Schools side that beat England, Wales and France that year.

That form pulled him away from home rugby for the first time. In 2013 and 2014, Wilco Louw moved to Pretoria to join the Blue Bulls age-grade system, winning the 2014 Under-19 Currie Cup and going on to add an Under-20 provincial title. The union that developed him as a teenager would recruit him twice more in the years that followed.

STORMERS, WESTERN PROVINCE, AND A BOK JERSEY AT 23

Louw returned to the Cape in 2015, joining the Stormers’ wider training group and working his way into their Super Rugby squad. He built his reputation across five seasons in Cape Town, playing for Western Province in the Currie Cup and helping the union to the 2017 title. His scrummaging that Super Rugby season was strong enough to earn a call-up to the South Africa ‘A’ side against the French Barbarians.

Wilco Louw

The Springbok call came the same year. Wilco Louw made his Test debut off the bench against New Zealand in Cape Town on 7 October 2017, drafted into the Rugby Championship squad after Coenie Oosthuizen broke his arm. He started his first Test a month later, an 18-17 win over France in Paris. In 2018, he was named in the Springbok squad for the June internationals, and that year’s Super Rugby season saw him win more scrum penalties than any other prop in the competition.

LEFT OUT OF THE WINNING SQUAD

By August 2019, Louw had 13 Test caps, the last of them against Argentina in Pretoria. He was not selected in the 31-man squad that went on to win the Rugby World Cup in Japan. Frans Malherbe, Trevor Nyakane and Vincent Koch were preferred at tighthead, and Stormers coach John Dobson said at the time that the depth ahead of Wilco Louw made it impossible to offer him guarantees.

Toulon signed him on a short-term deal as World Cup cover, a contract that kept him in France while the Springboks lifted the trophy without him. He did not return to South African rugby afterward. In 2020, he joined Harlequins in the English Premiership, replacing Kyle Sinckler in the front row, and it would be more than three years before he wore the green and gold again.

A PREMIERSHIP MEDAL AND A RETURN TO THE FOLD

Louw spent three seasons at Harlequins, making 49 appearances and scoring a try in the 2021 Premiership final, a 40-38 win over Exeter that remains the highest-scoring final in the competition’s history. In 2023, he came home, signing with the Bulls, the union that had shaped him as a teenager a decade earlier.

The move back to South Africa put him in Springbok contention again. In November 2024, more than three years after his last cap, Wilco Louw was recalled to the Bok matchday squad as Rassie Erasmus made twelve changes for a Test against England. It was his first involvement in green and gold since 2021.

A URC FINAL, A DIFFICULT STRETCH, AND A STARTING JERSEY AT LOFTUS

The Bulls reached the United Rugby Championship final in the 2025/26 season, with Louw starting in a loss to Leinster in Dublin. Weeks later, he was left out of the Springbok squad for the opening match of the 2026 Nations Championship against England. Erasmus explained that Wilco Louw had been through a difficult stretch, including a family bereavement and a period of illness, and needed a week to settle back in.

He did not wait long. Louw started at tighthead prop against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld on 11 July 2026, helping South Africa, ranked number one in the world, to victory with an entirely reshuffled front row. A week later, on 18 July, he was among the replacements as South Africa fielded four Test debutants against Wales in Durban, two days before his 32nd birthday.

STILL GOING: HOME TO THE STORMERS FOR 2026/27

In September 2025, the Stormers announced that Louw would return to Cape Town on a long-term deal from the start of the 2026/27 season, back to the union where he made his professional debut in 2015 and to the region where he was schooled and where his family farms. He is seeing out his Bulls contract through the current season before making the move, and arrives with 46 Stormers caps already banked from his first spell in the Cape.

Director of rugby John Dobson has called him one of the most respected props in the world game and pointed to his scrum culture as central to what the union wants to build. For Wilco Louw, it is a return to the team he grew up supporting, six years after he first left the Cape for Europe.

Happy 32nd Birthday, Wilco. From all of us at Just Plain Sport — Cape Town gets its front row back, and the Ceres farm boy finally comes home for good.
