SA Swimmers Smash Commonwealth Games Record with 22 Medals
Congratulations to Chad Le Clos and the South African swimmers, who leave Glasgow with 22 medals, the biggest haul any South African team has ever brought home from a Commonwealth Games. The previous record was 16, set in Delhi in 2010. This one was broken before the final night of competition had even finished.
Six gold, eight silver, eight bronze. South Africa finished second on the swimming medal table, behind only an Australian juggernaut that racked up 37 golds and 76 medals in total. It’s the highest South Africa’s swimmers have ever placed at these Games, having finished third on three previous occasions. This wasn’t a good week. It was a historic one.
The story that will be told longest started with a bronze medal that looked, on the surface, like a footnote. Chad le Clos touched the wall in the men’s 4x100m medley relay on the final night of competition, and with it became the most decorated athlete in the 96-year history of the Commonwealth Games.
Twenty-one medals. Seven gold, five silver, nine bronze, across five editions of the Games stretching back to Delhi in 2010, through Glasgow 2014, Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, all the way to a Glasgow homecoming where every single one of his three medals in the pool came via relay.
He surpassed Australian great Emma McKeon’s mark of 20, a record nobody expected to fall this year. At 34, in a sport that chews up careers well before that age, Chad Le Clos simply refused to stop adding to the pile.
Chad le Clos Makes History in Glasgow
If Chad Le Clos was the history-maker, Pieter Coetzé was the story of the week. The 22-year-old swept every backstroke event on offer, gold in the 50m in a Games record 24.18, gold in the 200m in a Games record 1:54.22, and gold in the 100m in a Games record 51.77, a time that sits second all-time in the world behind only Thomas Ceccon’s world record.
He broke the Games record seven times across the meet, on top of two relay bronzes and a mixed medley silver, taking his career Commonwealth Games medal tally to nine. His 100m backstroke time in the final would have won gold at every single Commonwealth Games ever held.
Lara van Niekerk provided the moment of the Games for the women’s team. Four years after winning gold in the same event at Birmingham, and after a stretch of illness and setbacks that had her questioning whether she wanted to keep swimming at all, she touched first in the women’s 50m breaststroke in 30.43, holding off Australia’s Sienna Toohey by eleven hundredths of a second.
She became just the third South African woman ever to win Commonwealth Games swimming gold, joining Natalie du Toit and Tatjana Smith. The tears afterwards told their own story.

Erin Gallagher closed out her Commonwealth Games career at the exact same pool where she made her debut twelve years ago as a Grade 10 learner. She left with three medals from these Games alone: silver in the 50m butterfly in 25.57, bronze in the 100m butterfly by a single hundredth of a second in 57.39, and bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay alongside Aimee Canny, Rebecca Meder and Olivia Nel in an African record 3:38.67.
Full circle, in the truest sense the phrase gets used.
Canny had a Games of her own to remember, silver in the 100m breaststroke in 1:06.19 and another silver in the 200m individual medley in a South African record 2:09.37, while also anchoring the mixed 4x100m medley relay alongside Coetzé, Michael Houlie and Gallagher to silver in an African record 3:42.61, Coetzé’s backstroke leg clocked at a scorching 51.98.
Houlie added his own silver in the 50m breaststroke in 26.77, and came agonisingly close to gold in the 100m breaststroke, breaking Cameron van der Burgh’s long-standing African record with a 26.38 split in the semi-final before finishing just outside the medals in the final. Kaylene Corbett claimed silver in the 200m breaststroke in 2:24.46.
The bronze medals kept coming too. Olivia Nel touched third in the women’s 100m backstroke in 1:00.09, Ruard van Renen doubled up with bronze in both the men’s 100m backstroke (53.31) and 50m backstroke (24.51), and the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay of Coetzé, Guy Brooks, van Renen and Chad Le Clos took bronze in 3:13.99.
Both medley relay teams added African record bronzes to close out the week, the women in 3:58.58 and the men, featuring Coetzé, Houlie, van Renen and Chad Le Clos, in 3:31.13.
What made this campaign genuinely different from past South African swimming teams was that it wasn’t only the able-bodied swimmers carrying the load. The para-swimming trio of Nathan Hendricks, Christian Sadie and Danika Vyncke contributed five of the 22 medals between them, and did it with records to match. Hendricks opened South Africa’s account with gold in the S13 100m freestyle in 54.54, then added silver in the S13 50m freestyle in 24.84.
Sadie set two Games records in a single day on his way to S7 50m freestyle gold in 28.06, having already broken the mark in the heats. Vyncke took silver in the S13 50m freestyle in an African record 28.41, and narrowly missed the podium in the S13 100m freestyle final, finishing fourth in an African record 1:04.88. This was a team story from first race to last, not an able-bodied story with an addendum.
Glasgow 2026 will be remembered as the week South African swimming stopped being a story about potential and became a story about delivery. Chad Le Clos etched his name into the history of the entire Commonwealth Games. Coetzé confirmed himself as the most dominant backstroker on the planet outside of a world record holder.
Van Niekerk proved a comeback can be as powerful as any debut, and Gallagher showed there are worse ways to bow out than on a medal podium in the city where it all started. With Los Angeles 2028 now the target on every one of these swimmers’ minds, this Commonwealth Games looks less like a peak and more like a launching pad.
