Birthday Tribute | Heinrich Klaasen | 30 July 2026 | Sunrisers Hyderabad · South Africa · Cricket

There are batters who accumulate. And then there are batters who detonate an innings in the space of four overs and leave the opposition captain staring at a field with no answers left. Heinrich Klaasen belongs to the second category, and he built an entire career on making that distinction obvious. Born on 30 July 1991 in Pretoria, Transvaal Province, he turns 35 today, a little over a year into a retirement from international cricket that South Africa never fully saw coming.

PRETORIA: THE BOY WHO STAYED QUIET UNTIL THE BALL ARRIVED

Klaasen grew up in Pretoria and was schooled at Die Hoërskool Menlopark before enrolling at the University of Pretoria, where he began playing for the university side while working toward a degree he would eventually leave unfinished for cricket. His father, Paul, introduced him to sport and backed him through the amateur years; Paul has since passed away, and Heinrich Klaasen has rarely spoken about it publicly.

What did become public, repeatedly, was the temperament that set him apart from most power hitters: he was never a screamer at the crease. Coaches who worked with him in the SA academy system noted a batter who looked almost bored under pressure, a trait that would later earn him the nickant of a calmer, more destructive cousin to cricket’s most famous finishers.

He made his first-class debut for Northerns in October 2012 and his List A debut for Griqualand West days later, working his way through a domestic system that rewarded patience more than power. There was nothing instant about Klaasen’s rise. He spent years as a solid, unspectacular domestic gloveman before anyone outside South African cricket circles knew his name.

THE TITANS YEARS: BUILDING A REPUTATION NOBODY RUSHED

Klaasen’s route to the top ran through the Titans, where from 2014 he became a consistent domestic run-scorer and a wicketkeeper trusted with the gloves in first-class cricket. It was here, not in franchise T20 cricket, that the foundations of his game were set: an ability to manipulate the field, a short backlift that generated disproportionate power, and a calm that South Africa’s national academy coach Shukri Conrad would later sum up by comparing him to MS Dhoni. That comparison stuck for a reason. Heinrich Klaasen did not panic when games tightened. He waited for the ball to arrive and then removed it from the ground.

His breakthrough into franchise cricket came via the T20 Global League in 2017, and small IPL deals followed, first with Rajasthan Royals in 2018 for a modest fee. None of it suggested the destructive middle-order weapon he would become. He was 26 when he made his first senior appearance for South Africa.

THE JOURNEY: A LATE START AND A SLOW BURN

Klaasen’s international career did not begin until 2018, an age at which many top-order batters are already established. His ODI debut came against India in Cape Town on 7 February 2018, his T20I debut days later, and his Test cap followed in October 2019 against India in Ranchi. The Test career never took off; four appearances and 108 runs at an average of 13.00 told their own story, and he walked away from red-ball cricket in January 2024 after a run of sleepless nights weighing the decision, choosing to focus fully on the white-ball formats where his hitting carried the most weight.

That decision proved decisive. Freed from the demands of red-ball cricket, Heinrich Klaasen turned into one of the most feared finishers anywhere in the world.

THE BREAKTHROUGH: CENTURION, SEPTEMBER 2023

Three weeks before the 2023 ODI World Cup, Klaasen produced the innings that changed how bowlers everywhere approached him. Against Australia in Centurion, he scored 174 off 83 balls, sharing a 222-run fifth-wicket stand with David Miller off just 94 deliveries as South Africa posted 416 for 5.

He struck 13 fours and 13 sixes before being caught on the final ball of the innings, an innings so complete that the Australian captain simply conceded his side had been outplayed. Days later at the World Cup itself, Heinrich Klaasen backed it up with 90 off 49 against Bangladesh, and in the semi-final defeat to Australia in Kolkata he added 47 in a rescue mission with Miller before falling to a delivery he never picked.

THE PINNACLE: 27 BALLS IN BARBADOS

Nothing in Klaasen’s career carries more weight than the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup at Kensington Oval. Chasing 177 against India, he arrived with South Africa needing to accelerate and delivered the fastest fifty ever struck in a World Cup final, reaching 50 off just 23 balls.

He put on 36 with Quinton de Kock and 45 with Miller, at one stage taking 24 runs off a single Axar Patel over to leave South Africa needing just a run a ball with six wickets standing. Hardik Pandya’s dismissal of Heinrich Klaasen for 52 off 27 in the 17th over swung the match; South Africa lost by seven runs, and India ended their own 13-year wait for an ICC title in the same match that denied Klaasen his. It remains the closest South Africa have come to winning a global white-ball trophy, and Klaasen’s innings is the reason that final is remembered as a heist rather than a rout.

FROM FINISHER TO FAMILY MAN

In June 2025, less than a year after that final, Klaasen announced his retirement from all international cricket at 33, walking away from a home ODI World Cup in 2027 that he had once planned to play. He left having scored 2,141 ODI runs at 43.69 and 1,000 T20I runs at a strike rate of 141.84, and having been left off Cricket South Africa’s central contract list months earlier.

He said the decision was about his family, describing it as one he had absolute peace with despite the difficulty of reaching it. Cricket South Africa’s chief executive Pholetsi Moseki called him a fantastic ambassador for the game whose performances had brought joy to South Africans across the country.

Retirement from international duty has not meant retirement from the game. Heinrich Klaasen remains contracted to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, where he scored a century against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2025 season just days before announcing his decision, and continues to feature across the global T20 circuit, including Major League Cricket and the Hundred.

Happy 35th Birthday, Heinrich. From all of us at Just Plain Sport — no South African finisher has ever made the biggest stage feel this unhurried. 🎂🏏
