How the Springboks Won the Series

The Springboks led 17-14 at halftime. Damian de Allende, Morne van den Berg and a Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu penalty had put South Africa ahead, but tries from Codie Taylor and Will Jordan, both converted by Damian McKenzie, kept New Zealand within three points at the break.

South Africa made four changes together in the 43rd minute — Andre Esterhuizen, Lood de Jager, Thomas du Toit and Gerhard Steenekamp all came on at once. The Springboks scored twice in the next eight minutes, through de Allende again and then Pieter-Steph du Toit, to lead 27-14.

Ethan Blackadder’s try pulled New Zealand back to 29-21 after the hour. South Africa answered with two more tries, from Kurt-Lee Arendse and Cameron Hanekom, both converted by replacement flyhalf Manie Libbok, extending the lead to 43-21. Beauden Barrett scored a late consolation try for New Zealand in the 79th minute, converted by McKenzie, for a final score of 43-28.

Seven Springbok replacements played a part in the second half, and five of South Africa’s second-half tries came after changes across the front row, midfield and flyhalf positions.
