CHAD LE CLOS CROWNED MOST DECORATED COMMONWEALTH ATHLETE EVER

Chad le Clos stood on the deck at Tollcross International Swimming Centre on Wednesday night and became the most decorated Commonwealth athlete in history, and for a man who has spent the past five years fighting battles far tougher than any race, the tears told the real story.

The 34-year-old claimed bronze in the men’s 4x100m medley relay alongside Pieter Coetzé, Michael Houlie and Ruard van Renen, an African record swim of 3:31.13 that handed South Africa bronze behind Australia and England. It was le Clos’s 21st Commonwealth Games medal, one clear of Australian great Emma McKeon, and it made Chad le Clos the sole most decorated Commonwealth athlete across any sport in the event’s history.

He never saw it coming. Not really. Not in the way most decorated Commonwealth athlete conversations tend to sound in hindsight, all inevitability and destiny. Chad le Clos has spent years saying the opposite out loud, and he said it again on Wednesday night. Looking back on the whole Commonwealth Games journey, from India through to now, he never thought he’d be standing here. To stand alone in history, he said, was unbelievable.

That journey started in Delhi in 2010, a 19-year-old le Clos claiming 200m butterfly gold on his Commonwealth debut. Glasgow 2014 turned him into a national obsession with a haul that included multiple golds. Gold Coast 2018 kept the medals coming. And then came the years that almost buried the story before it could be finished.

Birmingham 2022 should have been the coronation. Instead it became the closest Chad le Clos came to losing the plot entirely. He left England with a silver in the 200m butterfly, an 18th medal that tied him for most decorated at the time, but he walked away admitting he should have got over the line with an extra medal or two.

His preparation had been wrecked by a mental health crisis he’d been carrying since 2021, a period he has described as the darkest of his professional life, one that saw him seek professional help for the first time only after the disaster of Tokyo 2020.

“Some records get broken by talent alone. This one got broken by a man who had to fight his own head just to get back in the water, and that’s the part that makes it mean something!” – 🎙️Jay

The road back wasn’t instant either. Chad Le Clos has spoken openly about sitting alone in his room crying for no reason, about calling his ex-girlfriend from a hotel room in Eindhoven on one of the lowest nights of his life, about a psychologist telling him his happiness had become tied entirely to results in the pool. It’s the kind of admission most athletes never make publicly, let alone one carrying South Africa’s most decorated Olympic swimming legacy on his shoulders.

Last year, on his father Bert’s insistence, Chad le Clos took twelve weeks completely away from the sport. No gym, no swimming, nothing. He has called it a break he’d never allowed himself in his entire career, and it was that reset, as much as anything in a training pool, that got him to Glasgow in the shape to finish the job.

He arrived at these Games one medal behind McKeon and left with three, closing out the meet with bronze in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, silver as part of the mixed medley squad, and Wednesday’s bronze that sealed the record outright. Ten of his 21 career medals have now come in relays, a reminder that this milestone was built as much on teammates carrying him over the line as on his own butterfly stroke.

The emotion afterwards said everything words couldn’t. Speaking after an earlier relay he didn’t even swim in, Chad le Clos revealed his dad was in tears, that it had all been very emotional, and that he’d never given up despite a lot of dark times. He called himself a dog in a dogfight, someone who gives it everything once he’s in one.

That line does more to explain 21 medals across five editions of these Games — Delhi, Glasgow 2014, Gold Coast, Birmingham and now Glasgow again — than any stat ever could. Seven gold, five silver, nine bronze, and a Commonwealth Games record that Team South Africa’s own athletes were reportedly racing for in his name before Wednesday’s final even started.

At 34, and ten years the senior figure in a field of swimmers barely out of their teens, Chad le Clos isn’t finished. He’s already looking at a fifth Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028, which would make him the most capped Olympian South Africa has ever sent to a Games. Whether his body allows it is a question for another year. For now, Glasgow 2026 belongs to him, and so does Commonwealth Games history.

Nobody hands you the title of most decorated Commonwealth athlete for free. Chad le Clos earned his the hard way, through five editions of these Games and years most people never got to see.
