The South African swimming sensation Pieter Coetzé has firmly established his dominance on the international stage after a powerhouse performance at the 2026 China Swimming Open in Shenzhen.
Coetze proved exactly why he is considered the gold standard of backstroke by securing a clean sweep of all three backstroke events against the world’s best. The reigning world champion made his biggest statement in the 100m backstroke final, clocking a blistering 52.73 to claim the top spot on the podium.
In a high-stakes showdown, he held off the Olympic champion and world record holder Thomas Ceccon, who finished in 53.38, according to reports from Swimming South Africa.

The victory over the Italian star was the centerpiece of a historic weekend where the Pretoria-born star truly owned the water. Coetze opened his account with a victory in the 50m backstroke (24.83), edging out both Ceccon and Kliment Kolesnikov, before completing the set in the 200m backstroke (1:55.57).
The 21-year-old, often referred to by fans as the Drip King, showed elite composure across all distances.
