South African rugby has a knack for unearthing gems from unexpected places. Few stories capture that magic quite like the journey of nineteen-year-old Luan Giliomee.
Announced as a new signing by the Vodacom Bulls on May 11, 2026, the teenage utility back has gone from captaining a small Boland school to joining one of the country’s most ambitious franchises.
The three-year deal could see the youngster arrive at Loftus Versfeld as early as late 2026 with coach Johan Ackermann pushing for an accelerated release.

Standing at a compact 1.70m and weighing around 81kg, the prospect hails from humble roots in Ceres rather than famed rugby nurseries. His explosive pace and razor-sharp vision have already turned heads at every level of the game.
Versatile enough to slot in at flyhalf or fullback, the playmaker embodies the modern backline creator who functions as both a finisher and tactical leader.

The story began at Charlie Hofmeyr High School, a modest institution that is not usually on the radar of big-school scouts. Under the captaincy of Giliomee, the first fifteen went unbeaten for the entire 2024 season.
As the primary orchestrator for his side, the teenager delivered standout performances including a twenty-one-point haul against Langenhoven Gimnasium. At the prestigious Oakdale Rugby Week, he walked away with the accolade of best backline player of the tournament.
The talent soon represented Boland at provincial level and starred at the Under-18 Craven Week. These performances earned him selection to the SA Schools A side after he had already tasted international junior honors with the national Sevens team.
After school, the utility back joined the Hollywoodbets Sharks academy in early 2025. He quickly made his mark with the Under-21 side and helped them claim a national title under the watchful eye of the coaching staff.
The former Shark made his United Rugby Championship debut at fullback against Munster at Kings Park. Giliomee delivered a performance that belied his age, scoring a try and playing a direct hand in others during a dominant forty-five-nil victory.
A second appearance followed against Cardiff, though it was unfortunately cut short by injury. Despite limited minutes, the glimpses of quality confirmed that the young star belongs at the highest level of professional rugby.
The player also earned a call-up to the Blitzboks squad earlier in 2026. He scored his first try in the SVNS series and contributed to a historic Perth Sevens title win for South Africa.
There was no reported acrimony behind the departure from Durban as the franchise simply could not offer an immediate senior pathway. The Bulls pounced as part of an aggressive recruitment drive aimed at injecting youthful dynamism into their backline.
This signing is a significant statement of intent from the Pretoria-based side. Giliomee represents a long-term investment in a player who fits the evolving attacking identity of the team. The Bulls are undergoing a backline overhaul to align with the philosophy of Ackermann and new backline coach Neil de Bruin.
The recruit slots perfectly into this vision as a creative flyhalf who can also provide cover at the back. At Loftus, the prodigy joins an experienced core headlined by Springbok veteran Handre Pollard.

Pollard remains the go-to guy for big occasions and provides the structure the teenager can learn from during his development. Rotating alongside them will be Curwin Bosch, who arrives from France on a three-year deal this July.
Bosch brings proven experience and serves as a bridge between the control of the veterans and the flair of the youth. The coaching staff has framed these recruitments as building an explosive and attack-driven squad.
The speed of the newcomer and his willingness to take the ball to the line complement the measured approach of his senior teammates. Short-term expectations involve impact off the bench or regular minutes in the Currie Cup to build confidence.
Long-term, the ceiling is high enough for the player to become a Springbok contender within a few seasons. Rassie Erasmus values versatility and composure, which are traits the youngster has shown in abundance.
Pretoria fans can look forward to moments of magic as the future number ten everyone is talking about arrives at Loftus. Watch this space because Luan Giliomee is ready to light up the capital.
