Vodacom Bulls scrumhalf Embrose Papier has been named the South African Vodacom URC Player of the Season for the 2025/26 campaign, capping a remarkable personal resurgence for the 29-year-old.
Papier’s selection was determined by votes from the Springbok coaching staff, South Africa’s four franchise coaches, and broadcast commentators — a panel that unanimously recognised his standout contribution throughout the season.

The numbers paint a vivid picture of just how dominant he has been:
- 11 tries — 9 in the regular season, plus 2 more in the quarter-final Player of the Match display against Munster
- 550 metres gained with ball in hand — more than any other scrumhalf in the URC
- 15 clean breaks and approximately 30 defenders beaten
- 653 passes completed at 97% accuracy, with 5 try assists
- 813 touches across the season — exceptional for a scrumhalf
- 62 tackles made
But the award reflects more than statistics. At 29, with over 100 caps for the Bulls, Papier has evolved from a dangerous but inconsistent runner into a tactically complete general.

His low centre of gravity and explosive acceleration make him a constant threat at the fringes, particularly when opposition defences are slightly disconnected at the ruck.
His support lines have been a consistent highlight — arriving at precisely the right moment for offloads and link play, forcing defenders to commit to him and creating space for outside backs like Kurt-Lee Arendse, Canan Moodie, and Stravino Jacobs.
His distribution has been equally impressive, varying service speed with intelligence — quick flat passes to maintain momentum, or slightly deeper ball to give his forwards time to reset.
It is a level of tempo control that reflects the calmness he himself has credited for his improvement, and it has elevated the Bulls’ attack considerably, particularly at Loftus Versfeld where they use him to exploit tiring opposition packs.

The Bulls play a high-tempo, direct style built around powerful forward carries, and Papier functions as the spark that ignites it.
While players like Sanele Nohamba and Jaden Hendrikse bring their own strengths in kicking and physicality respectively, Papier’s combination of try-scoring, metres made, and consistency has been unmatched at URC level this season.
His irresistible form has drawn the attention of the Springbok selectors, with Papier recently included in the national alignment camp — raising the prospect of a Test recall after a lengthy absence from the green and gold.
Rassie Erasmus has long valued tactical discipline and composure under pressure, and those are precisely the qualities Papier has demonstrated most convincingly this season.

He joins an impressive list of previous SA URC Player of the Season winners that includes Evan Roos, Sanele Nohamba, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.
The Bulls were further honoured with the URC Innovation Award for their ‘Where Rugby Meets Entertainment’ project at Loftus Versfeld, while Papier was also named at scrumhalf in the URC Elite XV, with fellow Bulls players Johann Grobbelaar and Cobus Wiese earning selection alongside him.
Attention now turns to the URC semi-finals, where Papier will face Glasgow Warriors. If he continues at this level, the Player of the Season award may only be the beginning of what shapes up to be a defining year for one of South African rugby’s most complete scrumhalves.
