George Russell has sent a deafening message to the rest of the F1 paddock with a masterclass victory at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. The Brit turned a controversial pole position start into a dominant display of tactical superiority at a sun-drenched Albert Park.
While onboard footage showed Russell’s car rolling slightly before the lights went out, FIA officials confirmed the move was legal as he remained within his grid box. Despite an initially sluggish launch due to a depleted battery, Russell clawed his way back into the fight against a surging Charles Leclerc.

The race was defined by a frantic opening burst, with Russell and Leclerc trading the lead a staggering seven times within the first nine laps.

The turning point came during a Virtual Safety Car period, where a lightning-fast one-stop strategy from the Mercedes pit wall put Russell back in control. His teammate, Kimi Antonelli, secured a sensational second place on his debut to complete a perfect Mercedes 1-2 finish.
Meanwhile, all eyes were on Lewis Hamilton in his Ferrari, but the seven-time champion could only manage fourth after a late-race charge.
Russell’s victory marks him as the clear title favorite for 2026, proving that Mercedes has finally mastered the new regulation era.
