The collective heart of the South African rugby public sank today as Leinster confirmed the news everyone feared.
RG Snyman has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after scans confirmed a ruptured ACL sustained during the clash against Glasgow Warriors. This is the third ACL rupture of his career—the previous two were on his left knee while at Munster in 2020 and 2021.
It is a devastating blow for a man who has spent more time in rehabilitation than on the grass over the last four years. Snyman had finally looked back to his destructive best in Dublin, terrorising United Rugby Championship defenses with his signature offloads and towering presence at the lineout.
In nine URC appearances this season, he scored three tries and was consistently dominating lineouts and breakdowns.

Medical staff have projected a recovery timeline of six to nine months, which effectively ends his hopes of featuring in the July Internationals or the Rugby Championship. Leinster coach Jacques Nienaber described the injury as devastating for both club and country.
The Springboks now face the daunting task of replacing their most unique tactical weapon ahead of a grueling international schedule. While Rassie Erasmus has built incredible depth in the lock department, Snyman offers a specific set of skills that cannot be replicated.
His ability to change the point of attack in the final twenty minutes of a test match has been a cornerstone of South African success since 2019.
The focus now shifts to who will step into that specialized role as the race is on for the next generation of giants to prove they can fill the boots of the one-of-a-kind Viking.
