The Big South African Rayno Nel saw his dreams of a title defense vanish by a single slip in Myrtle Beach.
The engineer from the West Rand entered the 2026 World’s Strongest Man as the man to beat after his historic rookie triumph. He looked untouchable through the opening day of the finals before the momentum stalled at the tracks.

“Losing the title on a single fumble is a bitter pill, but Rayno proved he is still arguably the strongest man on the planet right now.” – Jay | JPS
The Saffa powerhouse dominated the first three events with clinical precision. He won the Monster Box Flip and Carry before pulling a massive 400 kg deadlift for five reps. By Saturday night, Nel held a 2.5-point lead over his closest rival, Mitchell Hooper.

Consistency became the name of the game as Sunday’s pressure began to mount. While Nel managed a 200 kg log press, Hooper chipped away at the lead without winning a single event. The gap narrowed to just one point heading into the dreaded Atlas Stones finale.
Disaster struck when Nel fumbled the 210 kg stone while leading the final heat. This momentary lapse allowed Hooper to finish his run and snatch the title away from the defending champion. Nel looked visibly distraught on the podium despite finishing with a record-high runner-up score of 52 points.
His transition from a Free State Cheetahs academy flanker to global strongman royalty remains unprecedented. Even in defeat, Nel proved that his 2025 victory was no fluke of the northern hemisphere. He returns home as the second-strongest man on earth with plenty of years left in the tank.
